The aims of the English Department at Lubavitch Senior Girls’ School are:

·To enable every child to develop their creativity whilst learning the technical skills required for accurate writing

·To enhance every child’s communication skills, both oral and written, for formal and informal purposes

·To encourage every child to widen their reading and their appreciation of literature across different centuries and cultures

Curriculum

Key Stage 3 (KS3)

Pupils study the following units:

Texts studied for reading and writing opportunities
Novel – studied from a variety of perspectives including background
World War II context in “Carrie’s War” & Animal rights in “Black Beauty”.
By year 9 students develop critical thinking skills while reading “Lord of the Flies”
Creative writing opportunities – e.g. letter from a character
Plays –explore dramatic techniques, group work, role play. We use texts such as
“War Horse” play adapted from the novel
Poetry - Analysing language, drama opportunities, writing different forms of poetry
Writing - exploring different genres
e.g. Persuasive writing – employing different techniques
Descriptive writing and narratives inspired by images
Literary Heritage – plays by Marlowe, Shakespeare and others

Throughout KS3, we place a significant emphasis on the use of a variety of lively teaching styles, with three clear parts to each lesson – starter, main body of lesson and plenary. The English teachers utilise the interactive whiteboard to use visual and oral stimulus to engage the pupils and build their enthusiasm for the subject. Pupil respond with confidence and use mini-whiteboards during lessons. We also have excess to a computer suite that is furnished with a class set of touchscreen computers and students regularly use the technology in English to redraft work, produce visual aids to oral presentations, research relevant topics etc. Enrichment is a key area for the department and students are encouraged to participate in a variety of national competitions for poetry and creative writing.

Assessment

AfL (Assessment for Learning) is used extensively in English. Pupils are issued with exercise books in order to draft their writing. Diagnostic feedback is given regularly as a result, pupil progress can clearly be seen at a glance. Peer assessment and self-assessment tasks are regularly used so students have the opportunity to check their progress and compare it with their peers. At the end of each unit, the work is teacher-assessed, using feedback sheets which focuses on the success criteria of the task. National Curriculum level can but are not always given, but pupils are informed of their progress through comments that focus on the positive aspects of their work and provide guidance for improvement.

Pupils are carefully tracked throughout KS3 to ensure that they are achieving their full potential. Small group and individual catch-up sessions are provided for those who need further assistance in making progress.

 

GCSE English

English Language

Paper 1 – 1 hour 45 mins 50%

• Section A Questions on literary text

• Section B Creative writing

Paper 2 -1 hour 45mins   50%

• Reading: Questions on 2 Sources - non fiction text (newspaper) non-fiction literary text (e.g. diary)

• Writing: Question 5 Write for a broadsheet newspaper

 

English Literature

Paper 1 Julius Caesar and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde 1 hour 45 mins exam 40%  

Paper 2 Animal farm and Poetry (anthology and unseen) 2 hours 15 minutes exam 60%

 

GCSE English Unit 1: Understanding and producing non fiction texts

The examination consists of two sections:

Section A: Non-fiction and Media is based on the reading of previously unseen material.

Section B: Writing Information and Ideas involves producing two pieces of continuous writing on a topic broadly linked to the reading material provided

GCSE English Unit 2: Speaking and Listening

Pupils engage in speaking and listening activities in a variety of formal and informal contexts. Three assessment showing individual, paired and group work

GCSE English Unit 3a:

Pupils study and respond to three texts, one Shakespearean, one modern prose, and one poetry. All three are literary heritage text and the poetry include a different culture or tradition/ contemporary text. Students produce three controlled assessments.

GCSE English Unit 3b: Understanding and producing creative writing.

Pupils produce two imaginative writing responses one which is personal and imaginative writing and the other to be inspired by a literary text.
