Citizenship Studies 

The full GCSE Citizenship Studies course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and understandings to play an effective role in public life. Over the two years they will learn about fundamental British values through lessons on their rights, responsibilities, duties and freedoms including individual liberty and mutual respect; about the rule of law, justice and democracy. Not only will students explore diverse beliefs, cultures and identities and the values we share as UK and global citizens but will develop research and analytical skills, debating skills, group and task management as well as active participation in their local, national and global community.

GCSE Course description

Edexcel GCSE Citizenship Studies (full course) is a two year course studied over years 10 and 11. The course is broken down into 4 units. Unit 1 and 2 are studied during year 10 with unit 3 and 4 completed in year 11.

Unit 1: Citizenship Today

- externally assessed written examination 1 hour

- 20% of the total GCSE (exam taken in year 11)

 

 

Unit 2: Participating in society

- internally assessed and externally moderated co

ntrolled assessment

- 30% of the total GCSE

 

Unit 3: Citizenship in context

 

- Externally assessed written examination 1 hour 15mins

- 20% of total GCSE (exam taken in year 11)

 

Unit 4: Citizenship campaign

- Internally assessed and externally moderated controlled assessment

- 30% of the total GCSE

YEAR 10

Autumn

Rights and responsibilities
Students will gain knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system, human rights legislation and the organisations designed to promote human rights, consumer and employment rights

Spring

Power, Politics and the Media
Students gain knowledge and understanding of the functioning of government and parliament, the influence of the media on government policy and the work of pressure groups.

Global Community
Students explore global ethics, trade and development. They will also look at the work of international organisations such as the European Union, United Nations and the Commonwealth

Summer

Coursework and Controlled Assessment

Students will work in small groups to run an active citizenship campaign about a social issue of their choice. This campaign will include; conducting primary and secondary research into their chosen issue, presentation of research findings, writing persuasive letters to people in positions of power, planning organising and conducting an awareness campaign, evaluation and analysis of campaign outcomes

YEAR 11

Autumn

Citizenship Campaign: Controlled assessment
The second piece of controlled assessment will build on the work completed in Year 10. Students are required to choose a social issue of concern, then plan and lead a campaign to raise awareness and make positive change in their community relating to their issue.
This will involve developing crucial skills such as teamwork, organisation, advocacy, research, persuasion and participation

Spring

Citizenship in Context:
Changing communities – social and cultural identities
In this unit, students will examine the multicultural nature of British community and how effective they think multiculturalism is. They will consider reasons why people emigrate and immigrate, what factors make up a person’s identity, how community cohesion happens and how successful equality laws are.
